Here is the Summer Cover for Family Business Magazine featuring ABC Recycling, at their Burnaby location. I shot this back in March on a rainy gray cold morning. Professional photo shoots are always more time consuming than most people expect, the family, owners and staff were patient and understanding. Their bright safety vests helped give the scene some "pop" given the soggy weather, and luckily they had a warehouse canopy where I was able to set up the shot with some background/industry interest. Special thanks to my assistant Kat.

My Workshop - Monday 30th March

About every 2 months or so, I hold a workshop for Artisans and Small Business people. The workshop concentrates on learning how to use your own camera gear, to make better photos of your Products or Artwork, typically for your website (small low res images). Compact cameras (point & shoot) are suitable for this purpose, though you need to know the particular settings to use to get the best Product photos. You'll find this useful if you want to populate your own website catalogue, or sell small items on eBay or Etsy.

Previous clients have brought Jewelry, Spa Products, Baby Items, Cup Cakes, Chocolates, Artwork and Cards, Art Materials, Flowers, Gift Baskets. The workshop is for products that fit on a table-top, more or less.

The next workshop is on Monday 30th March 2009.

Business Portraits with more...

I'll be at Douglas College next week, my regular Guest Speaker spot where I talk to the current SEP intake about buying/sourcing Photography for their new businesses. I also like to broaden their minds where it comes to Business Portraits, using your surroundings/environment/office etc can make for a more interesting photo that will communicate a lot more for you than a basic studio headshot.

You don't have to look at the camera, also you don't have to smile, these are optional and everyone is different. It is important though to look relaxed, and engaged. I'm published in the Georgia Straight (contents page), a topical photo for the banking/stock market/credit crunch news feature. Actually, the cover illustration is one of the funniest I've seen, check it out if you can.

This is a good example of what can be achieved with point and shoot cameras, I shot this with one of my old compact digital cameras, and a tripod. Clients who have attended my workshops will find this encouraging, I teach people how to use their compacts effectively (sometimes SLR users too). I've taught many artisans and small business people how to shoot their artwork, jewelry, cupcakes, chocolates, flowers, gift baskets and more. Contact me if you'd like more info.

And I almost forgot to show my favourite shot. It's agua fresca, shot for Glean Magazine, a Richmond publication. I styled and photographed the shot.

This week, a friend visiting me from Europe wanted to see Gabriola Island, what a great trip we had, the new BC Ferry from Horseshoe Bay was impressive, and the Malaspina Galleries on Gabriola were amazing. I took photos with some Toy Cameras, so who knows what they'll be like (for personal work, I like to experiment and play!).

It's always fun to see your work in print, after the copy and graphics are included. I really admire the work of Graphic Designers. It's important to leave areas of negative space when photographing a cover story like this, and it turned out great. The designing woman is Charmaine Lang of Lang Interiors, new to the North Shore but a well established company, successful and talented.

So nice that the Advertizer also mentioned my award in the community section, thanks you guys. I'm an award-winning photographer, takes a bit of getting used to but it's great to be recognised.

Well, this is my first post, so it seems appropriate to show a photo of me (left). Interesting, that I love photography yet I'm kinda camera shy.

This was taken at the North Shore Mayors' Golf event on 23rd May, it was nice to finally meet one of the shooters for the North Shore News - Mike Wakefield, who took this photo of me and Maureen.

Although it was the first year for the event, it was a great success and raised over $125,000. It really was a fun day and a pleasure to be involved, kudos to organizer Don Youngson and the lovely Jo Ann Kalley. For more info : www.nscommunityfoundation.com
